Dress Up Storage for Children's Costumes

by TerriRexson

A selection of storage solutions for children's costumes. Have you built up a big collection of kids costumes with lots of bits and need to organize them?

As I write this, I've just spent an hour sorting out my sons' dress up costumes into new storage. It would have been quicker but my preschooler tried on almost every one!

Previously all the costumes were in big storage bags which meant that if the kids wanted to find a particular costume then everything came out. Also it was hard to find all the pieces and role play accessories that went with each costume.

Something had to be done! I looked into various storage options which I'll cover on this page. The right solution for you will depend on the kind of kids costumes you have, how many you have (or expect to have!) and the shape and size of the space you have available.

A Dress Up Carousel

With Hanging Space, Cubbies, Mirrors, ...

The Guidecraft Dress Up Carousel is very well designed. It comes in white and pink for girls or a neutral natural color that works for boys and girls.

You can fit a lot of costumes and accessories into a small space with this carousel and still have them very accessible to kids.

The carousel has hanging space with drawers underneath on one side and storage cubbies with shelves underneath on the other side. A nice detail is the mirrors on each side of the carousel - kids love to see what they look like in their costumes!

The carousel revolves so kids can easily find what they are looking for.

The dress up storage carousel has a 20" diameter and is 49.5" tall.

It's a good choice for a playroom or preschool setting where you have some room around the carousel for kids to stand.

A Kids Clothes Tree

Another option for kids clothes storage is a child-sized clothes tree.

A clothes tree works well for body-suit type all-in-one costumes (super hero, animal, etc) and also for cloaks and capes. The lower branches of the tree can be used for dress up hats and masks.

This is a fun way to have a selection of costumes on display and readily accessible. Pair it with some regular storage drawers for smaller items.

This P'Kolino kids clothes tree is a great place to hang costumes from. It comes in a range of colors.

You can get more than one to make a small forest! They also work well for kids regular outdoor clothes too.

A Storage Bench

A storage chest or trunk is the traditional way to store costumes. But things can get muddled if you just have one big space for costumes.

A storage bench with drawers that pull out is a good alternative. You can also put larger items like swords and shields and fireman hats on top of the bench. And why not put some simple hanging pegs or hooks on the wall above the chest and hang some costumes up.

A Hanging Rail

This Guidecraft See and Store Dress Up Center includes a hanging rail so you can hang costumes up on hangers. This is good for for princess dresses and costumes that have pants and a top that need to be kept together.

You also get storage shelves at the side which is good for bigger hats like cowboy hats and crowns. There's storage at the bottom of the unit where you can put shoes, bags and other role play accessories.

And there's a mirror so kids can admire themselves when they're dressed up.

A Dresser with Drawers

Another storage option is to choose a kids dresser with drawers. Drawers are good if you have costumes with multiple parts that aren't each to hang up.

We chose drawers for storing our costumes because we have lots of boys costumes like knight, pirate and cowboy which have separate tops, pants, hats and other small accessories like eye patches and sheriff badges. Drawers keep the related items together and keep the dust off.

This kids dresser from Legare suits the purpose well. It has four deep storage drawers and a big shelf that works well for swords and shields - or tiaras and slippers! It comes in a range of colors: pink and white, red with navy or black, titanium, espresso and gorgeous green and white.

The dresser is part of a range of furniture which includes a mirror, desk, bookcase, storage bin and more so you can kit out the playroom or bedroom with matching furniture.
