by CeresSchwarz

What are some of the romantic date or gift ideas, that costs nothing, but that will allow you to make your lover happy and spend the day with him or her this Valentine's Day?

Is it really necessary to spend money for Valentine's Day? Will this day be any less special and meaningful for couples if they spend nothing at all? With how commercialized the day of hearts has become, there are many who put too much value on material things, like giving gifts, so much so that they end up losing sight of what's really important.

What should you remember about the 14th of February? What is this day really all about? It's not about the presents, no matter how expensive, that you give to your lover and it's not about how much money you end up spending that make up this day.

What really matters is both you and your partner. This day should be all about you two and your relationship because there's more to Valentine's Day than just giving gifts and spending lots of money. What you should focus on is your soul mate and how to make him or her happy as well as ensuring that you are able to spend some time (if not spend the whole day) with him or her.

There's no reason why couples can't have a special and meaningful Valentine's Day even without having to spend a single cent. At the end of the day, what matters is that this February 14 is something that the both of you can always look back on and remember with a fond smile and with a rush of happy memories.

Experiences like that won't easily be forgotten and are something that will always be etched in your mind, never to fade away and this is something that can be better than any material thing that you can give and receive. So, what are some romantic date or gift ideas, that costs you nothing, but which can make both you and your lover very happy on Valentine's Day?

1. Hug

Embrace your lover

Do you think that's lame? Do you think that this is a lousy idea and that it's not even fit to be considered as a possible gift because you always hug your lover anyway, so what could be new and special and meaningful about this? Well, think again. And don't underestimate the power of a hug. There is so much more to a hug than just a gesture that couples can share. Let's take a look at some possible scenarios:

Hug Your Lover

Show how much you love your soul mate

Have you and your soul mate been spending much time lately? Are you possibly missing each other because of your conflicting schedules, so much so that you 2 barely have the time to say hello to each other?

Are you both too busy to even talk, much less hug, even for just a minute? Or, is your girlfriend / boyfriend or wife / husband feeling too tired and stressed out at work? Is he or she feeling frustrated and alone for one reason or another? Does he or she think that there's no one there for her or him? These are just some of the many instances wherein your significant other could sure use a hug. Besides, what's wrong with hugging more often?

This is a great way to show how much you love and care about each other.

More than that, a hug allows you to say so many things without words, without having to speak.

A hug can say, "I'm here for you. You're not alone. You can talk to me anytime and I will listen.

"Hold on to me. Let me hold you tight. Don't worry, don't be scared because I'll always be here for you."

Of course, it goes without saying that a hug can definitely express the words "I love you".

Because, really, why would you want to hug a mere stranger or a casual acquaintance that you don't even know very well?

It's only those that are special to us that we would want to hug and hold and cherish.

So embrace your sweetheart. Just hold on to him or her.

Express yourself via hugs

If he or she needs to talk and cry on your shoulder, then let him or her and be sure to comfort him or her and tell her/him that you're there and you're ready to listen and you always will be. This Valentine's Day, share several long hugs with your special someone as you spend the day together, just hanging out and talking and laughing and enjoying each other's company.

Watch a movie with your lover

You can watch any movie you want to such as romance, action, adventure, etc

2. Watch A Movie

Are you thinking, "wait, you want me to watch a movie with my lover? Well, sure, but, I thought all the things listed in this article were supposed to be free. How is watching a movie free?"

Well, if you've got free tickets to go watch a movie, then, yes, it would certainly be free.

However, even if you don't have free tickets, you can still watch a movie with your soul mate for free. How, you ask?

First of all, there's really no need to think about the theater when you think of watching a movie.

There's no reason why you and your partner couldn't watch a movie in your or his/her house.

You could watch something on the television or you could pick from one of the many DVDs that you likely already have.

You could even decide to watch on your laptop or desktop computer instead of watching the movie on the TV. Watching a movie at home doesn't and shouldn't make your Valentine's Day any less special. Remember that what is important is you get to spend time with your significant other.

You two can have fun watching movies together, laughing and talking about whatever you're watching as you sit close to each other and just enjoy each other's company. You can choose to watch romantic movies though neither of you should feel obliged to do so.

Just because it's the fourteenth of February doesn't mean that these are the only kinds of movies and shows that you should watch especially if both of you prefer to watch other kinds of movies like action and adventure.

You can also consider letting your special someone be the one to choose what movie you're going to watch even if you know you're not going to be pleased with his/her choice since you're not fond of those types of movies.

But you can always choose to indulge your lover anyway, just because you want to make him/her happy and just because you love him/her much more than words can say.

For example, if he/she loves anime, then you can suggest that you two watch some anime movies even if you might not be fond of anime at all.

You can always alternate in who gets to choose the next movie.

After all, who says that you should only watch one movie?

Let your partner choose what movie you 2 should watch

And, if you're already a member of Amazon Prime, then you should have even more movies to choose from for you and your sweetheart. It shouldn't cost you anything to watch movies on Amazon if you're already a member of Amazon Prime. You can choose from over 40,000 movies and TV shows and you can watch anytime and anywhere you want.

Otherwise, you could always try the Amazon Prime free trial. It lasts for 30 days so, even after the day of hearts is over, you and your spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend can still enjoy watching free movies while enjoying each other's company.

Walk with your lover

But take the time to hold each other's hands and look into each other's eyes to make things even more romantic, special and meaningful

3. Take A Walk

A Romantic Walk

This one is definitely free but you might be thinking, "oh yeah, great, but what am I supposed to do exactly? You want me to just walk around with my lover? What are we going to do? Walk around all day? How can this be romantic?"

First, you don't have to walk around all day. You can choose how long you want to walk and where you two want to go.

Don't just walk around. Walk while holding each other's hands and talking. Talk about anything and everything that you want to.

Aside from admiring the scenery that you pass by, take the time to look into each other's eyes as you continue to talk and walk.

You can go anywhere you want to. You can let your partner decide where he or she wants to go. Or you can be the one to decide. You can choose to take your soul mate to a park and you two can even have a picnic together. You can even decide to go to the mall, just to window shop or something.

If your lover is feeling cold, be sure to put your coat or jacket around her to keep her warm.

Enjoy the beauty of nature and your surroundings.

You could even bring your cameras to take pictures of these beautiful scenes.

Of course, you should also be sure to take pictures of each other in order to document this special moment.

You can take pictures of both of you together and hugging with happy smiles on your faces, framed against a stunning background.

Perhaps, you can even decide to watch the sunset together after a long and enjoyable walk.

What's really important is that you 2 have fun and you get to spend a lot of time just hanging out with your soul mate and enjoying each other's company.

Eat with your lover

Have a romantic candlelit meal with your significant other

4. Have A Meal For Two

A Romantic Meal

Who says that you have to spend some money just to have a romantic candlelit dinner with your special someone?

If you eat at home and just make use of the food that you should already have, then you won't need to spend anything at all.

You can be the one to cook a romantic meal for your partner.

If you can spend the entire day with him/her, you can eat together for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Just because you're just eating at home doesn't make your meal or the food any less special and romantic.

In fact, you can even say that eating at home can be even more romantic than eating out. Why?

This is because you took the time and the effort to cook delicious food for your significant other so he/she can have all of his/her favorites. If you like, perhaps both you and your lover can cook together. Spend time together in the kitchen, helping each other make a wonderful meal that you can share afterward.

Have fun cooking as you two talk and just enjoy each other's company.

If you're not very good at cooking, you can always ask your partner to teach you and help you such as with cutting the meats and vegetables.

If it's the other way around, then you can be the one to teach your lover how to cook.

When you're having your meal together, be sure to have a conversation with each other.

Talk and laugh and just enjoy each other's company as you look into each other's eyes.

Sometimes, it's these little and simple things that can really express just how much you love each other.

Eat outside or inside the house

Remember that you don't have or need to serve expensive food. Even simple food can taste good especially when shared with the one you love

Sometimes, it's things like this that can really show how much you cherish your wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend.

Go stargazing with your lover

You can hold hands as you look up at the night sky filled with shining stars

5. Watch The Stars

Stargazing Together

It goes without saying that this activity is especially for those who love astronomy and the stars and the sky.

However, even those who aren't really into this can still enjoy a night of stargazing with their soul mate.

Don't you think it's really romantic to be able to be beside your lover as you two look up at the vast night sky and just admire all of the bright, shining, twinkling stars?

If you're lucky, you might even be able to see a shooting star then either or both of you can make a wish.

You can also bring a telescope with you. Did you have a star named after your lover in the past? If so, when you go stargazing this Valentine's Day, you can look for the star that you got for your soul mate. While watching the stars, the two of you can just talk and hang out and enjoy each other's presence.

You could have a romantic dinner/picnic outside before lying down to watch the stars. Feel at peace as you lie beside your lover with both of you looking up at the sky, just watching the stars while talking softly to each other.

Conclusion

These are just some of the romantic date or gift ideas, which will cost you nothing, that you can consider doing  for Valentine's Day.

Remember that you don't have to give presents to your lover on the day of hearts.

It's not the material things that matter but the time that you spend with your soul mate.

As long as you two are happy together, it should be all that matters.

So, what do you think of these possible ideas?

What kind of gift would your partner like to receive on February 14?

Would she/he prefer getting a material item or would he/she like it more if you spent some time with him/her?

How much will you spend for your lover on valentine's Day?

@Mira - thanks. Yes, walks can be a great way to spend time together no matter the season because there should always be something nice to look at and the scenery can be amazing regardless of the season. If eating outdoors can't be an option at the moment, one can always choose to eat indoors at one's house.

@AbbyFitz - thanks. Yes, it's always good to be able to spend some time with your loved ones even if it's not Valentine's Day or even if there's no special occasion. Sometimes, it's just good to hang out and be there for each other or just talk and catch up on how the other is doing.

These are good ideas not only for valentines day, but anytime you want to spend time together

These are nice ideas. A long walk and eating outdoors are wonderful. Maybe harder if the temperatures don't help much, but still, even though eating outdoors might not be an option, walks are great in all seasons.
