The Secret or Law of Attraction and The Bible

by BardofEly

Lots of people have been using and promoting the Law of Attraction made famous by the film The Secret but where did all this start?

For the past several years there has been a lot of talk about the Law of Attraction which was brought into the public arena by a film entitled The Secret, followed by a book and numerous spin-offs. The idea is that we can all control our lives and get what we desire from the universe if we know how to do so and use this law.
We are shown examples of very wealthy and successful people and it is claimed they got like this because they all know The Secret. Basically it consists of mind over matter on a vast scale. You visualise what you want and the universe supplies it. This is called “manifesting” your desires by using the Law of Attraction. But you can also get very bad things happening in your life as a result of your thoughts. It is a form of positive thinking.

Wallace D. Wattles and the origin of the Law of Attraction

The author of The Science of Getting Rich

The literature and publicity material that abounds about The Secret or Law of Attraction suggests different sources from where it originated. Some say the author and philosopher Wallace D. Wattles was the man who came up with it first.

His book The Science of Getting Rich, first published in 1910, has “The original guide to manifesting wealth through the Law of Attraction,” plainly displayed on its back cover. Of course getting rich is something that most people want to do and so the book sells well.

The original film of The Secret also showed lots of images of how wealthy people live. It gave you the idea that if you knew the Law of Attraction you too could live in a mansion with your own swimming pool, buy a very expensive car or jewellery, live like the celebrities do.

Jesus Christ and the Law of Attraction

Use of the Law of Attraction in the Bible

However, bearing in mind that The Bible’s Old Testament views divination, wizards, fortunetelling, familiar spirits and the occult in general very badly, it is perhaps surprising to learn that Jesus himself used the Law of Attraction and recommended it to his followers.

The Law of Attraction gets the sort of results occult practitioners desire, and is magic in action and principle. You would think the Son of God would condemn this perhaps, but not so!

In Matthew 21:21 it says: “Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.”

He was talking about how he had caused a fig tree to wither away and die because he was displeased with it finding that it had no fruit but only leaves. Leaving aside the rather negative picture of Christ killing a tree, it suggests strongly that he was using magic or mind over matter powers.

What he desired happening then took place because he willed it.  He is saying in the example he gives that much greater things can be done by faith alone, and that it is possible to even cast a mountain into the sea if your will and belief is strong enough.

We all have heard that “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God,”  and so we can assume from this that the true origin  of the Law of Attraction was God and that using it gets the divine stamp of approval!

I love the law of attraction, it is evident in the Bible frequently. I live the positive vibe, some think I'm just to positive and yet little do they know I aim to attract like minded people. I was thrilled to hear the law of attraction was catching on. I tell you this if you don't combat the negative of this world and charge up your positive energy daily you're tank runith empty. Good article. :)K
