Antique Duncan Phyfe Couch

by Digby_Adams

Extraordinary selection of Duncan Phyfe antique couches and sofas.

If you're decorating your own home, then you know how intimidating it is to pick out furniture, especially big and expensive items like sofas and couches. Well imagine how it feels to be renovating a large 18th Century farmhouse (all by yourself) and finding furniture - and this is the big one, staying on budget. That's the pickle that my husband and I are in. Luckily he's an engineer and I'm pretty good at following instructions. So Matt is mostly in charge of the construction, and I'm mostly in charge of buying furniture. In the beginning I spent hours trying to figure out what kind of couch I wanted. Then I could see it in my mind, but I couldn't describe it to the hapless antique dealers who were trying to help me find it. Then I spied the perfect couch and I knew what I was looking for! It is a antique sofa by Duncan Phyfe in rich red fabric.

The antique Duncan Phyfe sofa was so out of my budget range. But it was comforting to know at last what I was haunting antique stores, thrift shops and ebay for. I can just see this couch or something close to it in my husband's library in front of the fireplace. The two end tables on each side have turquoise peacock figurines. I love deep red and turquoise together. We do have 3 rooms finished and just waiting for furniture. The peacock decor library is one of them. Pining because I don't have money - just yet, isn't my style. So while I'm checking out what I really want, I'm also figuring out how to modify what I can afford.

You never know what you'll find on ebay or in a thrift store. Some people don't know what they have. They just think it's old Aunt Mildred's ugly couch, when it's really my Duncan Phyfe antique sofa. I did find an old beat up look-a-like for about $150. I read a book on upholstery and it became my project - $200 later the Peacock library had a red couch.

While you're haunting thrift shops, be sure to check out ebay. Some of the antique furniture is very reasonable. Especially if you live near the ebay seller and can pick it up.

From antique and ornate bath tubs to Victorian sofas, I love claw feet. It's probably my most favorite furniture detail. My husband only smiles as he walks around the house and sees my latest furniture steals and deals. He is afraid that I might have too many pieces with this one feature. He's hoping that I step out of my comfort zone. Well the last time I did that and decorated his library with peacock feathers, vases and bookends, he almost passed out.

I really have found some wonderful pieces and great shops on ebay. While you're browsing take note of how many ebay sellers are actually antique shops that have put their inventory online. While it might take me days to cover these shops in the van, it's just takes hours on ebay. Then if they're within a day's drive, Matt and I drive over and pick it up. Sometimes if we love an item and its in Portland, Oregon or some other far away place we have them ship it. I get to practice my patience skills, because that can take up to eight weeks. But it's so worth it!

I love antiques. That's a little too formal for me, but I bet your place is going to be beautiful.
