Lego - The Best Gift for Kids
by TerriRexson
We love Lego in our house! If you're looking for the best gift for kids, I'd recommend a Lego set. Let's take a look at this classic toy.
We Love Lego
I'm writing this page just after Christmas. My kids are on the floor playing with Lego. This is very normal! Lego is one of their top few favorite toys. In this article, I'll provide an overview of some of the popular Lego ranges and sets - we've got personal experience with most of them!
We got a lot of Lego for Christmas. I say 'we' because I got a Lego house myself and me and their Dad have spent lots of fun hours helping with Lego models over the holidays.
If you're buying a gift for a child from preschooler through to tweens and younger teens and you're not sure what to get, then we think Lego makes the best gift for kids. It's probably a more obvious choice for boys, but many girls love Lego too, and there are ranges designed for girls (I would have preferred the non-girly Lego as a child myself though.)

A classic big box of Lego bricks makes a wonderful gift for kids. It's a good choice if you want to get a joint family gift for kids of a variety of ages. My kids were interested in proper Lego as toddlers and many kids stay interested through to their teens.
In our house more Lego is always welcome. It means there will be enough when Mom and Dad want to play as well as the kids, and we do :)

Lego has a great range of Lego House sets, with new sets coming out in the range most years. I got a Lego house myself for Christmas. It's fun to have a gift I can share with my kids and I genuinely enjoy making Lego models with them.
I asked for a Lego house because they are nice big sets to build and once you've made the models that come with the sets you can make alternative models - like your own house! You also get a really good range of bricks in the Lego house sets - lots of standard bricks plus interesting shaped bricks. These sets make a great addition to a Lego collection and there are sets that will appeal to girls and boys, and adults too!
Star Wars Lego
Star Wars Lego is very popular and set to last. There are new sets coming out all the time but for kids just starting out on their Lego Star Wars collection we recommend the Lego Star Wars Luke's Landspeeder.
The Landspeeder itself is very cool and kids will enjoy building it - and it has a secret compartment to store light sabres. But the real draw of this set is the excellent collection of Lego Star Wars minifigures, you get Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobe, R2-D2, C-3PO and a Sandtrooper.
We actually got this set a while back on a trip to Legoland, but the kids were too young to build it themselves. My 5 year old just got another set for Christmas and we're keeping it so he can build it himself and now we'll have two sets of the figures - great for when the boys play together.

Lego Ninja Sets
Lego Ninjago is one of the newer Lego themes and my boys are hooked - this is currently their favorite Lego range. I got my older son a couple of small Ninjago sets for Christmas and now he and his brother want to spend their Christmas money on more Lego Ninjago sets.
The sets feature Ninja minifigures and there's a great backstory with a TV cartoon show to support it. Kids love to learn all about the characters and recreate the story in Lego. This means these sets get played with very well.
There's also a Lego Ninjago game that uses minifigures on spinners called Spinjitzu.

Lego Harry Potter
Harry Potter Lego
The Lego Harry Potter range is really popular. I'm looking forward to these sets! My boys are still too young for Harry Potter, but I read all the books as they came out. In a few years I'll start reading the books to my sons and then I'm sure they'll want to add Harry Potter to their collection.
I love the Harry Potter Hogwarts set. There are loads of different sets in this range so you can recreate the whole Harry Potter universe.
Lego City
Lego City - Buildings and Vehicles
The Lego City range is full of Lego buildings and vehicles so you can build your own city made from Lego.
My younger son got the Lego Space Shuttle for Christmas. This was a great choice for a little brother. He's 3.5 and of course he wants toys like his big brother, not baby stuff. He was able to put the minifigure together himself and put lots of pieces onto the set with help from his Dad - he can't follow the instructions yet like his big brother. And now it's made he has a cool space shuttle to play with.
The Lego City range includes big complex sets like the Lego Police station too. Many kids collect the Lego City range and end up with a very cool collection.
The Lego City range tends to get played with a lot once the sets are built - it's like building your own toys to play with.
I hope you enjoyed the Lego overview. You might also enjoy Lego Gifts for Lego fans. And don't forget Lego Storage - they'll need somewhere to keep it all!
