Lion Costumes for Kids
A selection of lion costumes for kids. You can go cute or scary with a lion costume. Dressing up as a lion is for for role play, parties and of course Halloween.
Lion Costumes for Children
Being a lion is great fun! You get to run around roaring and being king of the jungle. My toddler and preschooler boys love to dress up as wild animals. Dressing up as a lion is great for role play and ideal for Halloween. We've included full costumes and ears and tails.
I'm not quite sure why a kid dressed up as an apex predator is cute, but it is! Lion costumes are generally fairly warm so it's a great choice for keeping warm when trick or treating around the neighborhood on Halloween.
We've also included ideas for lion-related matching costumes for siblings and ideas for famous lions to dress up as.
Here's a selection of the best lion costumes for kids.
How old is your little lion?
Famous Lion Costumes for Kids
There are quite a few famous lions from movies, TV shows and real life that you can create a costume around. Ideas include:
- Simba from Lion King
- The Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz
- Aslan from Narnia (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe)
- Lion from Tinga Tinga Tales (we love this show!)
- Christian the Lion (he's been famous on YouTube recently)
- Ryan or Samson from the Wild (Father and Son lions)
- Alex / Alakay from Madagascar
You could just take any lion costume and add some accessories to become a famous lion. There are also some specific costumes for being a famous lion from Lion King or the Wizard of Oz.
A Lioness Costume for a Girl
Most of the available lion costumes are male lions with manes. But we did find this gorgeous wrap-around lioness costume which is perfect for a little girl who wants to be a lady lion.
This lioness costume makes a fun Halloween outfit as it's really easy to wear. It's great for role play as well as kids can get it on and off quickly. If your kids are anything like mine they want to be a lion one minutes and a paleontogist the next!

Baby Lion Costumes
Do you have a cub to dress up as a lion? OK so real lion cubs don't have a mane. But these baby lion costumes do look very cute on an infant!
These costumes work brilliantly if you have a big brother or sister who wants to dress up as a zookeeper or Safari ranger or perhaps as Diego from Go Diego Go.
A zookeeper plus a baby lion makes a very cute combination.
Lion Costume Ideas for Siblings
Do you need matching costumes for siblings? Here are some ideas for lion-themed matching costumes.
- Dorothy (or Scarecrow or Tinman) and the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz
- Zookeeper or Safari Ranger and Lion
- Lion Pride - great if an older child loves lions and you have an infact sibling or several to be lion cubs
- African Cats or Big Cats - add a Leopard, Jaguar, Tiger or other big cat.
- Lion King Simba and Nala.
- Diego from Go Diego Go and Lion Cub
Lion Ears, Tails and Hats
For role play a partial lion outfit can be fun. You can get lion ears and mane on a headbad and a tail on a waistband or a lion hat. And we've included a fluffy lion vest too.
And we just love the kids wooly lion hat below. It's great as part of a costume but it can also be worn regularly in winter. Last winter my toddler son wore a fleece lion hat every single day, and frequently refused to take it off indoors as well! Everywhere we went we got comments on the cute hat. I think this knitted lion hat is even cuter though.
Lion masks add a finishing touch to a lion costume - bought or homemade. Or they can be used on their own for role play. You can go for a full face lion mask or just a lion nose mask.
We have several of the Wild Repulic foam masks in our dress up collection. They're a great inexpensive addition to the dress up box and they look very cool on display too. The foam masks are much more comfortable than the hard plastic masks I remember as a child.
What Noise do Lions Make?
Lions make a very distinctive roaring sound. You could get a lion soundtrack like the one featured to the right and put in on an MP3 player with portable speakers to give people a fright on Halloween! Or you could just have your little lion practise his or her roar.
At a recent zoo visit my partner asked my two year old son what the animal in front of him was (it was a tiger). He said lion. But he wasn't confused about his big cats. He thought his Dad was asking about the Lion roaring behind the tiger enclosure. He knows what a real lion sounds like!
Lions also snarl. And they purr too.
Songs about Lions
How about some Lion-themed music for getting in the mood? It's great fun to dress up as a Lion and sing songs about lions. We've included a couple of our favorite tracks on the left.
Of course The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Wimoweh) is an obvious choice. We've included a glorious version by African band Ladysmith Black Mambazo. We have a lot of music for adults by this band and couldn't resist when we saw a children's album by the band. The album and this track include lots of interesting stories for children and the music is a wonderful celebration of African, land of the lions.
And we've included the Just Can't Wait to be King track from the Lion King broadway musical album. Very appropriate for a would be lion.
You can buy the individual tracks on MP3 (but in both cases the albums they come from are brilliant and can be bought as MP3 albums or on CD.)
We hope you have fun
We hope your child has lots of fun dressing up as a lion. It's a great opportunity to teach your child a little bit about Africa, the food chain and about endangered animals. And it's also a great opportunity to be silly with your kids. Why don't you pretend to be a Zebra or Wildebeast and let them chase and catch you?
