Pico Pocket Projector Battery Life

by TerriRexson

How much battery life can you get from a Pico pocket projector? What is typical and what is the best pico projector battery life for portable use?

Running a Pico Projector on Battery Power

If you want to use your Pico projector away from a source of mains power then the battery life is going to be very important to you.

The battery life on many pico and pocket projectors is low and won't last for a full movie or presentation. That's fine if you'll normally be at home or in a meeting room where you can be plugged in.

But if you want to use your pico projector while camping or out and about where access to power is not always convenient then you're going to want to make sure your projector will last for the tasks you have planned.

Best Pico Projector for Battery Life?

The MicroVision SHOWWX+ is a good choice if battery life is important to you. It offers around 2 hours battery life and you can buy an extra battery to double the projecting time.

How Long do Pico Projector Batteries Last?

It's quite typical for a pico projector battery to last around one hour. 60 minutes is not very long if you want to watch a movie or give a presentation.

It's fine if you just want to show a few photos to friends, or give a short impromptu demo.

The quoted battery times are usually for activities with a lower load. If your media puts a higher load on the projector then the battery time will be reduced (many pico projector users report lower battery times than reported.)

And of course the capacity of batteries does decrease over time.

Over 2 Hours Battery Life

The Cinemin Swivel Multimedia Pico Projector claims over 2 hours of battery life from its included battery.

This is a very good battery life. But the projector has a low brightness for a pico projector. Only 8 lumens. This is reflected in the lower price of this older pico projector.

But if you want to pop round to give the family a slide show (with the lights out) and put the projector on the coffee table and not worry about people tripping over the power cable, then it might do the trick.

What Sort of Batteries do Pico Projectors Use?

Pico projectors generally have a rechargeable Lithium ion (li-ion) battery. This a common type of battery for gadgets.

Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector Battery Life

The Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector is a very popular model. It only offers around one hour of battery life from its included battery. You can get an extra battery that offers up to another hour. Note than when running on battery power this projector operates at reduced brightness.

But there is also an extended battery pack available that offers up to 5 hours, but at additional cost. This extended battery pack supports the higher 50 lumens brightness.

Can you get a spare battery?

A key consideration is whether you can get a spare battery for your pico projector so you can swap it in when the first battery runs out.

Admittedly it's going to be much less convenient if you have to take an extra battery with you - one of the reasons for choosing a pico projector is its small size after all.

And additional batteries will cost more. You may be better off buying a more expensive projector with a longer battery life.

Up to 2 hours extra battery life

This extra battery for the popular MicroVision ShowWX and ShowWX+ pico projectors offers up to 2 hours of additional battery life.

The MicroVision ShowWX and ShowWX+ pico projectors come with one of these batteries so in total you can get up to 4 hours projecting time away from an AC power source.

Reviews suggest that 90 minutes per battery may be a more realistic expectation for typical usage.

Does the Pico Projector have a Brightness Control?

Some Pico Projectors have a brightness control. If you are in a dark room, or don't need a very large image then you may be able to turn down the brightness and extend the battery life.

Pico Projector with Adjustable Brightness

The Optoma PK201 Pico Pocket Projector has an adjustable brightness setting. You can use this to extend the battery life when running on battery power.

The projector offers up to 20 lumens of brightness. In a dark room or with a small picture size, a lower setting may be adequate.

How Long do Pico Projector Batteries Take to Charge?

It's typical for a pico projector battery to take around 4 hours to fully charge from empty. They take much longer to charge than discharge and you are going to need access to a power supply for several hours to charge up a projector battery.

Note that in most cases the battery will not charge well while the projector is in use. So you won't be able to use the projector and recharge the battery at the same time.

Also remember that the battery will need to be in the projector to charge, so you won't be able to charge multiple batteries at the same time unless you can find a compatible Li-Ion battery charger to take with you (it's not looking so portable now is it!)

Universal Li-Ion Battery Charger

You may be able to find a Li-ion battery charger that works with the rechargeable battery for your pico projector.

There are universal chargers available that work with many li-ion batteries from cameras, camcorders and other devices.

This would allow you to leave one battery charging while the other is in use, or charge two batteries simultaneously.

Will Newer Pico Projectors Have Longer Battery Life?

You might expect that newer pico projectors will have a longer battery life as the technology improves. But this is not necessarily the case. Newer pico projectors are often more powerful than older models.

This means that you will find older projectors with longer battery life than newer projectors - but less brightness. If battery life is more important to you than brightness then you may find an older model is the better choice.

75+ Minute Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery

The Aaxa P4 Pico Projector is a new model with a powerful 80 lumens of brightness (this is high.)

The brightness is excellent. But it does mean that the battery life is specified as 75+ minutes. Not long enough to watch a movie. You might get through a presentation if the battery is full charged.
