Protein Supplements for Women

The best protein supplements for women are not necessarily designed specifically for women. Read more to find out what are the top protein brands for women.

Many women are looking to add additional protein to their diet through supplements. For years, the marketing of supplements has been geared towards men and the weight lifting industry. However, in recent years the importance of a protein for women has gained prominence. In these article we will evaluate the best protein supplemental options for women to consider.

What is the RIGHT Protein Powder for YOU

Determining your goals

One must be careful not to make generalizations about the entire population of women looking for more protein. Your reasons are your own. It is true that there is a common theme to what women want from a protein supplement. They can be broken down as follows:

  1. Weight Loss: Not every woman is looking to lose weight, but most have probably at least entertained the idea at some point. The weight loss industry is a huge business. As such, there are many products on the market targeting the weight loss niche. More specifically, they target women. The problem with many of these "weight loss" brands is that they are heavily marketed to cover up a sub-par product. It is no secret that one of the keys to weight loss is increased protein. Protein keeps off cravings, facilitates a healthy metabolism, and provides long term energy. Many "weight loss" supplements are really just glorified protein shakes. For example, Jillian Michaels protein shakes are a perfect example of heavy marketing hiding a mediocre supplement. In my experience, the best protein powders for women are frequently the least promoted brands for weight loss. Ultimately, better quality and quantity of protein per serving is the best weight loss supplement.
  2. Muscle Gain/Toning: Often related to weight loss, but nonetheless distinct, is the desire for a more chisled body. Whether it is popular culture or personal drive that is the motivation, many women want not just to lose weight, but to be fit and toned. With this in mind, it is clear that once again protein supplements are an essential aid in this goal. Protein enhances workouts as both a pre and post workout supplement. It is like a turbo charge to a workout. One without the other means a lower return on invested energy. Unlike protein supplements for weight loss, muscle gain protein powders are not merely concerned with limiting calories and replacing them with protein. Muscle building requires more complex amino profiles and a larger more concentrated dosage of protein per serving.
  3. Dietary Supplement: Some women are happy, or at least at peace, with their body and want to maintain the status quo. Especially for middle aged women heading towards the Golden Years, good dietary nutrition is almost like putting an investment in the bank for later. Depending on dietary restrictions, obtaining top quality protein becomes an important concern for long term health and wellness. Some protein supplements are better suited to this purpose.

Of course any protein supplement can be used for all three. A protein powder geared towards the dietary supplement market can also aid in weight loss and vice-versa. But it is also true that some protein brands are better at doing one task over the other. There are also some great "all around" protein supplements that are very versatile.
