I grew up in Dorset and my dad used to tell us lots of stories, basically taking bits of folklore and legends and then mixing them up with a little storytelling flair. In his story the Cerne Abbas Giant was an actual giant and is responsible for a number of names of villages in Dorset ie Puddletown was where rain gathered in one of his footprints and as for the 'Piddle' villages - you can imagine what they represented! I forget how in his story the giant became 'trapped' as a chalk figure, but it was entertaining. Sometimes it's nice to have a little mystery about the actual origins :)

I like to remove the crabs eyes while it is alive and then pull the legs off one by one until it's just a pile of shells, then I drop it in the boiling water to finish it off. I guess I am a crab genitorturer.

You're not alone. I think that half of the UK have no idea what they're waving in the air.

I noticed your wizzle on Syd Barrett, my son is a fanatic (and my husband from years ago) so I sent the link to my son. It seems I'll never escape Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It was all my husband played when we dated, then when our son learned to play guitar, he tuned his guitar like Syd and sings in that low voice. I loved Opal. I think Roger Waters hid that one because he was jealous! I think Syd was a genius. When he passed, people also broke it to my son as gently as if it was family. Humagaia - Awwww! I have some sympathy for those in Kent. At least the Jutes stayed in the south-east corner and left the name of the place in the original Celtic. (Cantii tribe = Kent.)

Jean - You are very welcome. If you go back far enough, Scotland and Wales were fighting together. The Celts of lowland Scotland (think Strathclyde) were akin to the Welsh. Then the Vikings of Northumbria came and took Rheged (modern day Cumbria) and the whole 'divide and conquer' strategy kicked in.

If you need any help with your Irish genealogy, I can see what I can find. Just PM me with what you have and I'll hunt for you. One thing to keep in mind is that many, many records were lost in the central office in Dublin, when it burned down during (I think) the Easter Rising. If it wasn't then, it was the war that followed.

Scotland and Wales have all of the resources. It's England that needs them both. For example the water supply tends to rise in the Celtic countries, then run down into the Germanic one.

Thank you Jo, for this informative piece. My Mother was half Irish, and I've been reading a lot about Ireland lately, especially an author Patricia Monaghan. I realize that's likely a common name. I was slowly coming to the conclusion that in Ireland, you need to discuss it by County, and then a smaller location within that. And I wouldn't touch "Britain" and UK with a ten foot pole. It's much clearer now. I never realized there were so many tiny islands off the coast either. Really interesting and enlightening. I wonder if Scotland and Wales will be able to separate? It seems in a way they all need each other.

Hi Katie - Thanks for your article. I've been "watching" Zujava and checking the forums there because it is so new and there are always growing pains to be expected, glitches, etc. I'm quite cautious with those things because time is so limited, so I'm still in "wait and see" mode.

I'm still not grasping the affiliate part. I know that ads are shared and part of the "payout" like Squidoo does. But can I use my own affiliate links for Amazon, Zazzle, etc. and keep it...or is this going into the "pool" as well, to be shared with everyone else, simply shared with Zujava, etc.?

I know some people reported a nice starting payout, but then referred to referrals and sales being the main income - which sounds like Zujava is sharing whatever sales I would make (like Squidoo).

I do better on my own with affiliate items and ads on my sites or by shared impressions (Wizzley), so that is why I've resisted joining to date. I know, because it is new, the tier payments cannot be much until there is more content built on the site...that is normal...but my brain just isn't taking in the affiliate part in all of this and if I can put in my own links vs splitting/sharing.
