Lego 9469 Gandalf Arrives features the scenes at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring (the first book of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy) where Gandalf the Grey arrives in Hobbiton on a horse and cart and is greeted by the hobbit Frodo Baggins.
Gandalf has arrived both for fun (he has fireworks in the cart) and on a more serious mission pertaining to a certain ring.
This set come first chronologically in the Lord of the Rings timeline so it's a good set to start with.
Lego Gandalf Arrives is the smallest and cheapest set in the Lego Lord of the Rings range.
The set features Gandalf with his horse and cart and Frodo Baggins right at the beginning of his adventure in the Lord of the Rings. This is where it all starts. And look on the back of Gandalf's cart, there will be fireworks.

This set will include Gandalf the Grey and the hobbit Frodo Baggins minifigures. It just wouldn't be Gandalf Arrives any other way! It's going to be interesting to see the size difference between these minifigs - hobbits are much smaller than wizards. In the movie special effects were used to get the relative size of the figures right.
Oh and there's the horse too, to pull Gandalf's cart. No, it's not Gandalf's horse Shadowfax at this point is it? Shadowfax appears later if I have my Lord of the Rings timeline right. The horse is interesting though - it can rear up on its hind legs, which is new.

Now's a great time to re-read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, starting with the Fellowship of the Ring.
There's a Kindle Edition available, if like me you are moving away from physical books. (I can't imagine getting rid of my paper copies the the LOTR trilogy though!)
Lego Gandalf Arrives is due for release in June 2012.
Brickipedia reports that Lego Gandalf arrives will have a retail price of $12.99. This will be the smallest and cheapest set in the 2012 Lego Lord of the Rings first wave and will make a great starter set.

The Gandalf Arrives scene is always bitter sweet to me. It's a lovely scene where Gandalf arrives in the shire and is greeted by Frodo Baggins.
It's where we get the famous 'A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.' quote from Gandalf, delivered with faux gravity.
I think the Lego Gandalf Arrives Lego set will give me the same feelings that the movie and book do. A happy scene in Hobbiton, with the lovely things that hobbits enjoy, and a wizard at his most relaxed. But with foreshadowing of what's to come.
My mind races ahead to what I know will come ... Enjoy the moment, I think - both for myself and Gandalf and Frodo.
Before all that nastiness, there are fireworks to be enjoyed! As we all know, Gandalf doesn't arrive in the shire with an empty cart. And his Lego cart is sure to contain fireworks.
